Sharing knowledge and experience around the world during UNGRSW 2021
Last week, iRAP joined forces with our partners and RAP Community all across the world to support the United Nations Global Road Safety Week (UNGRSW) #StreetsForLife #Love30 campaign.

During the week we collaborated with the Global Alliance of NGOs for Road Safety to produce a series of videos that shared the community voice.  We also collaborated with NACTO-GDCI to release a series of animations, based on the  iRAP Star Ratings of NACTO-GDCI’s Global Street Design Guide, to demonstrate how lower speed streets can save lives.
iRAP also participated in a number of online events, including presenting in 10 webinars during the week with over 1,000 attendees participating.

Below are a few images from the training during the week. Congratulations to everyone who was involved and advocated for #Love30 #StreetsForLife worldwide.

Celebrating International Women in Engineering day in June
International Women in Engineering Day (June 23 2021) is an international awareness campaign to raise the profile of women in engineering and focus attention on the career opportunities available to females in this industry. It celebrates the outstanding achievements of women engineers throughout the world.

This year the the theme is 'Engineering Heros' recognising the amazing work that women in engineering around the world are doing as a response to the COVID19 pandemic and also to support lives and livelihoods every day.

Our #RAPcommunity is made up of just over 20% females and we're keen to encourage women to contribute to save lives around the world on our roads.

This year you will see a few initiatives from iRAP that will benefit and encourage women to be part of our #RAPcommunity, including:
  • celebrating women making a difference in road safety as part of the International Women in Engineering Day campaign.
  • selecting 20 women to take our Star Rating Essentials and Star Rating for Designs courses for free.
Watch out for this space and don’t miss this opportunity!

usRAP offers free courses in the USA

With the support of the Federal Highway Administration, the Roadway Safety Foundation is able to offer U.S. Road Assessment Program (usRAP) online introductory courses.

Now in their third year, these courses have been a popular and efficient way to attract new usRAP partners, and train teams of coders needed to conduct a full usRAP study. Attendees receive professional development credits, and are eligible to receive no-cost technical assistance and further training by the usRAP team if they pursue a project.

RSF and other partners at Iowa State University (host of the online courses and one of usRAP’s 3 Centers of Excellence) are always looking for ways to improve the courses, and will be making some updates this year. Make the most and spread the word about the availability of this exciting training opportunity!

Are you interested in becoming an iRAP Accredited Supplier?

iRAP accreditation helps ensure that iRAP assessments are performed to the same consistently high level of quality worldwide. Consultants that are accredited can become part of a market of suppliers that are able to bid competitively to provide iRAP-specification services. Although not mandatory, we encourage organisations that are performing and/or commissioning iRAP assessments to make use of accredited suppliers.

Currently, we have 206 accredited inspections systems and individuals from 67 organisations in 38 countries.

Accreditation of practitioners (individuals)
Three categories of accreditation are available to individual practitioners:

  1. Road survey (described in the iRAP Survey Manual).
  2. Road Attribute Coding (described in the iRAP Coding Manual).
  3. Analysis and Reporting (described in the iRAP Star Rating and Investment Plan Manual).
Practitioners may hold one or more category of accreditation at a time.

Accreditation of inspection systems
This is for organisations that have their own equipment and software and want endorsement that it is able to be used for iRAP-specification surveys and coding. Organisations that want to market and sell their equipment and survey seek this accreditation.

An accredited inspection system is capable of being used in:
  1. The performance of survey activities described in iRAP Survey Manual and road attribute coding activities described in the iRAP Coding Manual; or
  2. The performance of road attribute coding activities described in the iRAP Coding Manual.
The requirements for system accreditation are described in the iRAP Inspection System Accreditation Specification.

What are the benefits of iRAP Accreditation?
  • Formal acknowledgement that a practitioner can perform iRAP-specification activities.
  • Formal acknowledgement that an inspection system is capable of being used to perform iRAP specifications.
  • Listing on the iRAP website as an accredited supplier. This listing is used regularly by organisations procuring iRAP-specification services, such as the World Bank.
  • Join a community that is guided by the iRAP Accreditation Code of Conduct.
  • License to use the iRAP Accredited logo.

Additional training opportunities
For those that want to learn how to Star Rate road designs using the Star Rating for Designs (SR4D) web app, this course is now available in English, Spanish and Vietnamese.

The SR4D tool empowers designers and road engineers to assess the road safety of a design and improve its safety star rating before the implementation of civil works. It enables the Star Rating Methodology to be streamlined into the road design process.
